When should my child’s first visit to the Dentist be?

Many parents are surprised to learn that their child should have their first dental visit by their first birthday.

To prevent early childhood cavities, it is important for parents to learn about their child’s risk of developing cavities. They also need to learn how to manage diet, hygiene and fluoride to prevent problems.

Children Dentistry

During your child’s first appointment we will discuss:

  • How to care for your child’s mouth

    Proper use of fluoride

  • Oral habits, including finger and thumb sucking

  • Ways to prevent accidents that could damage the face and teeth

  • Teething and milestones of development

  • The link between diet and oral health

  • For older children we will:

Provide a thorough exam to check for cavities and proper development

  • Take dental x-rays, clean their teeth and give flouride treatment

  • Give oral hygiene instructions

  • We will then schedule follow-up appointments (for routine maintenance or any treatment required including fillings and sealants).
